Current & Former Huskies Cut By Riders

Posted by Darryl Skender on June 23, 2010

It was a sad day for 3 players that have ties to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies football team. OL Patrick Neufeld, LB Taylor Wallace and OL Jordan Rempel were all released by the team.

The good news for Neufeld is that he will return to the Huskies this season and Riders coach Ken Miller hinted that he may be back for another tryout after this season.

As for Taylor Wallace, it would have been a great story. He was not drafted but was invited to training camp after Ray Williams had left the Riders to go to the NFL. Wallace used up his last year of eligibility with the Huskies last year and his football career may be at a stand-still. There have been rumours that he may get involved in coaching in some type of capacity.

Rempel is a different story. He was drafted in 2007 by the Hamilton Tiger Cats and ended up a Roughrider last spring in a trade. However, Rempel got injured in training camp and missed the entire 2009 season. One has to wonder if he’ll get picked up by another team.

Former Huskies that remain on the Riders roster are offensive linemen Kelly Bates and Gene Makowski.

Mustangs Name Assistant Coach

Posted by Darryl Skender on June 23, 2010

I just got off the phone with head coach & Director of Hockey Operations Darrell Mann and he had some exciting news. He has decided on a replacement for Trevor Blevins who left the team to take over the reigns of the Tisdale Trojans. Darrell has hired 30 year old Cory Unser. Unser captained the Tisdale Trojans back when Mann was the coach there. He went on to play a couple of seasons in the WHL with the Brandon Wheat Kings before going over to CIS hockey with the University of Regina Cougars. The 6’2″ 187 pound defenceman also played in the Central Hockey League for the Oklahoma City Blazers and Amarillo Gorillas. The Gorillas will not be icing a team this year because of a lack of investors commiting for the 2010-11 season. Darrell will be making the announcement at tonight’s AGM.

Posted by Darryl Skender on June 13, 2010

Yes I haven’t been adding to this lately and there has been plenty going on. Just finding it tough to find the time to update the blog right now. I will be in Waskesiu for the next week covering the Men’s Lobstick for the radio station so it is unlikey I will be able to add to the blog this week as there is not much for internet in Waskesiu. Take care.

Hawks AGM Tonight

Posted by Darryl Skender on June 9, 2010

The Nipawin Hawks will hold their Annual General Meeting tonight. It starts at 7:30 at the Evergreen Centre. Items on the agenda will include the voting in of 3 new board members, financial statements/this year’s budget, the introduction of new head coach Doug Johnson and talk of what direction the club is going in.

On Monday, I was at the Media Day Pike Festival event which is where members of the media are teamed up with fishing guides and their boats so that we can tag fish which will later be caught when the Pike Festival starts later this month. I was teammed up with Dennis Botterill, who will be officially voted in as the team president tonight as he takes over from Blaine Clarke. We talked for hours about the Hawks and the more I spoke with him, the more apparent it was that he is definitely the right man for the job. By the way, we caught 10 fish (6 walleye/4 jack) between us. He seems extremely pleased about the hiring of head coach Doug Johnson. There were many good candidates for the vacant coaching position from around the SJHL and beyond.

I also met Johnson at the event on Monday (although I’ve talked to him on the phone many times since he arrived in Nipawin) at lunch. He has high expectations for this team this year and admitted to having a large learning curve when it comes to local players in the province. He told me yesterday that he will be meeting more fans at tonight’s AGM.

Johnson also believes that Botterill will be a good fit to lead the board. He said, “That’s a great move for the organization, he’s a guy I’ve worked with quite a bit here, very profssional, cares a lot about the Hawks and he’s going to be a nice addition as president. Botterill is an ex-RCMP member and also currently farms. He’s actually donated some land to the Hawks to hopefully raise revenue for the organization.

From what I’m told, the franchise did not do too badly financially last year despite small crowds at the Cage. They finished on budget thanks to some great fundraising etc. One thing that has hurt the club in the past is having only played a total of 3 playoff games in the last 2 years. If Dennis and Doug have their way, that will change dramatically this year.
