Brkich Named Mustangs Playoff MVP

Posted by Darryl Skender on March 31, 2011

The Melfort Mustangs announced that defenceman Scott Brkich is their Reed Drilling playoff MVP for 2011. Brkich was one of just 8 players to play in all 11 post-season games and collected 1 assist in that span. The interesting part about this is that it was the High River, AB native’s first trip to the playoffs in his 3 year junior career and he made every game count. Brkich said, “I was just honored, we had a lot of good players and playing in the playoffs for Darrell and Cory is a huge honor.” I asked him if he was expecting this award as he must have known he was playing well in the playoffs. Scott said, “I knew I played well but I wanted to win, I wasn’t really concerned with it at all. It’s more or less, as I said before, an honor to be noticed by the coaching staff.” He also went on to say that guys like Brody Haygarth and Brayden Metz could have just as easily won the award.

The 6’4″ 212 pound rear guard played with 3 different SJHL teams which included stops in Flin Flon and Nipawin before coming to Melfort for their playoff run. He is in Calgary with his parents right now and says he is taking 2 weeks off before resuming his training. Brkich has a couple of possible options for future schooling that he’s hoping to get worked out in the near future.

Darrell Mann’s Contract Not Renewed

Posted by Darryl Skender on March 29, 2011

It is always a sad day in the newsroom when one of our coaches will not be returning. In my 4 years here, I went through it twice with the Nipawin Hawks (Dave Hrysky & Colin O’Hara) and now with Darrell. I spoke with president Barrie Jung about the decision this morning about why it was made. He said, “I think more than anything, it was time for a change. Darrell has done, I think, a great job for us. He’s put us in the playoffs every year since he’s been here. We had a little trouble getting into the 2nd round for a few years but he’s always built a good entertaining team. We made it past the first round this year and got in against La Ronge and ran into some obstacles. I think they thought it was 7 years and time to change things up a little and try something different.” There was no doubt that Darrell and Barrie were friends and that made the decision even tougher. Barrie would not tell me what the vote was but did say it was not a unanimous decision.

“Manner” as he is known by everyone in the business, knew he needed to put together a solid team again this year. His contract was not extended at the start of last season which was a telling sign. He did assemble an excellent club and picked up some marquee names along the way. He guided the team to a 2nd place finish in the Bauer Conference during the regular season and had the least goals against in the entire league. His club was also the 2nd best penalty killing team, 4th best power-play team, had the 4th most shots, lost just once in regulation when leading after the 1st period, and had the 2nd highest attendance figure in the SJHL. However, a 2nd round exit in the playoffs was not enough to get his contract renewed.

A lot of people will remember Darrell for his yelling at officials and early playoff exits. For those that got to know him will remember him for much more. Things like his commitment to the city of Melfort, his love for the organization, his passion for the game, being an excellent family man, his savvy trades and his recruiting skills would be just naming few of his characteristics. He seemed to know every kid in western Canada from age 15 & up, what team he played for and who his coach was. He did a lot of homework and is still very connected in the business.

At the end of the day, the Mustangs organization wanted a team that would go deep into the playoffs and win a championship and you can’t blame them for that. I’ve heard all the same names you have that have been thrown around for a possible replacement so I’m not getting into that. Barrie did tell me that the organization is starting the search immediately. I talked to 3 players this afternoon and all were a little shocked and disappointed which is expected. Darrell isn’t moving anywhere in the immediate future but I’m told he is already a candidate for a couple of different jobs. His family likes to spend summers at the lake with their trailer and I’m sure he’s looking forward to that again this summer. I fully expect to see him behind someone’s bench for the start of next season.

Ice Wolves Win Thriller

Posted by Darryl Skender on March 23, 2011

It was an exciting game from start to finish for the fans at the Palace last night, unfortunately the Mustangs just came up a little short. Logan Herauf scored his 2nd of the night with just 4:33 left in the 3rd period to give La Ronge a 4-3 victory in front of close to 1200 fans. The Ice Wolves played a 2nd game in a row without sniper Doug Lindensmith while the Mustangs were without Adam Wihak and Brett Kipling. It started out looking like it might be a long game for Melfort after falling behind 2-0 in the 1st period on PP goals by Phillipe Cliche and Skyler Hladun. But yet another highlight reel goal from Brody Haygarth made it 2-1 at the intermission. Melfort was 2-men short when Haygarth went end-to-end, cut inside on the defenceman and beat Adam Bartko. The Mustangs built momentum from that as they ended up scoring 3 in a row to take a 3-2 lead into the 3rd period. That’s when Logan Herauf took over. The winning goal came on a turnover when a Mustang forward gave the puck up, which was immediately passed out front to the Balgonie product and into the back of the net.

The Ice Wolves have regained home-ice advantage in the Bauer Conference final leading the series 2 games to 1. It’s a huge Game 4 tonight at the Palace as Melfort is in a must win situation as they don’t want to fall behind 3-1 going into La Ronge on Friday. The d-core is a little banged up with Kipling already out, Mitch Berg playing hurt and Brendon Wall getting getting injured again. It’s playoff time and the guys are sucking it up however. Brody Haygarth and Scott Brkich are both having great series in their respective roles.

These are 2 very evenly matched teams and I’m still expecting a long series. The big difference last night was discipline. La Ronge had 8 power-plays (2 goals) while Melfort had just 1 (0 for 1) which was for 58 seconds. The Ice Wolves PP is too good to give them that kind of an advantage on special teams. Tonight’s game starts at 7:30 PM. Pre-game show at 7:15 PM. Hope to see another big crowd at the game.

Mustangs Take Game 1

Posted by Darryl Skender on March 19, 2011

The Melfort Mustangs wasted no time in gaining home-ice advantage in their Bauer Conference final against La Ronge. The Mustangs beat the Ice Wolves 4-3 in overtime last night to take a 1-0 series lead. The Mustangs fell behind in the 1st period but came back scoring 3 straight times to take a 2-goal lead until La Ronge scored twice late to force the overtime session. Brody Haygarth scored the winner just two-and-a-half minutes into the 4th period to send most of the 627 fans home disappointed. The reason I say most is because there were some Mustang fans in attendance. In fact, it was a Melfort fan that won the guaranteed $1000 dollar 50/50 draw.

The team headed into the game in high spirits. It was a short trip to Elk Ridge where the club checked in and had a pre-game meal and sleep earlier in the day. The townhouses we’re staying are 2 stories, sleep 6, have 2 bathrooms, full kitchen, fireplace, excellent food and a scenic view. We headed to La Ronge at about 3:45 PM and arrived at 5:30 PM.  Brody Haygarth was my first intermission interview which is posted on this website.

Heading into tonight’s game, there will be changes in the Mustangs line up, not because of injuries or bad play, but because Darrell Mann believes this will be a long series and has the depth to insert new players without skipping a beat. I won’t say what the changes are because I’m not sure that the players have been told yet. We’re checking out at 2:30 PM today, then heading to the restaurant for our pre-game meal. We have been fed very well. Today has been a relaxing day and right now I’m just sitting around watching March Madness (Kentucky vs. West Virginia). I can’t update the Mustangs “Goal Calls” on my website until I get back to the station tomorrow and pull the audio off our logger tape. Anyways, tonight’s pre-game show is at 7:15 PM with the play by play at 7:30 PM. Go Stangs!

Mustangs Fan Bus To La Ronge

Posted by Darryl Skender on March 15, 2011

The Melfort Mustangs will have a fan bus going to La Ronge on Saturday. It worked out well in their series with Humboldt and they are hoping there will be equal interest heading north. It leaves the Palace at 2:30 PM Saturday afternoon. The cost is $50 dollars which includes transportation and a ticket to the game. There must be at least 35 people committed to going by 5:00 PM Thursday. To sign up, call Kendra Campbell at 752-9403. It should be a lot of fun so give Kendra a call.

Hawks Pontoon Boat Raffle

Posted by Darryl Skender on March 15, 2011

The Nipawin Hawks are currently holding a Pontoon Boat Raffle as their latest fundraiser for some much needed money. The great part about this raffle is they are only selling 500 tickets so odds of winning are much better than your regular lottery. My wife and I just bought a ticket for it this afternoon. They are $100 dollars apiece and available from Flowers ‘N Things or any board member. The first prize is a Pontoon boat with a 90 HP Yamaha motor and a trailer package. The value of this is $30 000 dollars. The second prize is a 32 inch Sony TV worth $700 dollars. The draw date is July 20th. There will be early-bird draws on April 17th for a Hummingbird Portable Fish Finder worth $350 dollars and a 3-seat swing with canopy valued at $200 dollars.

Mustang Report

Posted by Darryl Skender on March 15, 2011

It was a great final game where both teams played their hearts out but it was the more experienced Mustangs counting on a couple of veterans (Brayden Metz and Jesse Mireau) to win Game 6 by a 2-1 score. Melfort doesn’t have a whole lot of time to celebrate their series win over the Humboldt Broncos as the La Ronge Ice Wolves are waiting for them this weekend. Here is yesterday’s Mustang Report which was heard on both stations.

Mustang Report

Melfort is hoping to have most, if not all of their regulars back in the line up for the Bauer Conference final.
