Mustangs Hire Assistant Coach

Posted by Darryl Skender on June 27, 2011

In the end, the Melfort Mustangs didn’t have to look far to find their assistant coach. Head coach Gavin Holcomb decided on former Nipawin Hawk assistant Dwight Kulchysky. Kulchysky brings plenty of experience both on and off the ice. Holcomb told me this morning, “He has a lot of experience in recruiting and scouting and he’s going to bring that with him along with bench duties and practices and everything else that comes with coaching duties. Anything that he can bring to the table right now, we’re fortunate to have.” Gavin believes the 2 will have good chemistry behind the bench.

When I spoke with Kulchysky this morning, he was equally as excited to be a member of the Mustangs. He said, “It gives me a chance to get back to what I like doing, getting a chance to give Gavin a hand in Melfort, getting a chance to work with another organization and I know the people in Melfort… it should be great.” Spears, as he is known in the hockey world, has been a scout for the Prince Albert Raiders over the past 3 years. He was the assistant coach in Nipawin for 8 years and did much of the recruiting for the Hawks while there. He’s not sure if he’ll be back to scout the Raiders with his new job. He said his main focus is on the Mustangs now. He knows it will be a tough grind this year but is looking forward to helping Gavin rebuild and helping put their new brand on the team. He replaces Cory Unser who was not hired back after one year with Darrell Mann.
