I’ll start off by saying that it is a bitter sweet announcement in the newsroom this week. Gino De Paoli has moved on to our sister station in Whitecourt, Alberta to do afternoon news/sports as well as having a hand in the junior ‘B’ hockey team out there. His last day was Saturday and we should be making a decision on his replacement in the next week or two. We are sorry to see him go but are happy he is advancing his career.

The next set of congratulations goes to my color commentator for Huskie football games. Kelly Bowers will be inducted into the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame on October 29th. And all I can say is it’s about time. He has been volunteering in the area for close to 50 years. He has been a mainstay in Saskatoon during that time refereeing basketball. He’s also been or still is involved in football, tennis, wrestling and track. He was the offensive coordinator with the Saskatoon Hilltops for 2 of their championships in the 90’s. Way to go Bif. The only problem now is I’ll need a color guy for the October 29th game in Alberta. I have put an email out today to former Golden Bears coach Jerry Friesen to see if he’ll be able to do it. He of course has ties to Saskatchean football and is a terrific guy.

Next on the list while we’re talking about the Huskies would have to be Jade Etienne, Rory Kohlert and Patrick Neufeld for making the CFL. Etienne is a receiver with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Kohlert is a receiver for the Hamilton Tiger Cats while Neufeld will be part of the offensive line for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Unfortunately, linebacker Peter Thiel didn’t make the Riders but rest assured, just as Neufeld did, Thiel will be given another shot next year. In the meantime, he will be back with the Huskies this Fall.

On the hockey front, congratulations to Dwight Kulchysky, who did color for me during last year’s SJHL playoffs. He has been given the assistant coach job for the Melfort Mustangs. Dwight will add valuable experience to the coaching staff. He told me on the phone jokingly that he hopes he’s not available to do the playoff run for me next season, of course hoping his team will still be in the running.

Still with hockey, Humboldt Broncos fans waiting to hear some news on the trade that sent Spencer Braaten to the Kindersley Klippers will have to keep waiting. Dean Brockman is not ready to make the announcement yet and I can’t say anymore because it was a confidential conversation I had with him earlier today. Still with the Broncos, I added 3 more RBC Cup reports in the “RBC Cup” section yesterday. The Humboldt host committee has been doing a fantastic job so far in preparation of next year’s big event. It has been time consuming for me to do them but has also been fun at the same time.

And I’m not leaving the Nipawin Hawks out but Doug Johnson has been down in the States. He’s coming back now but I can’t speak with him tomorrow because I have a Huskie press conference in Saskatoon tomorrow (Wednesday). I will call him Thursday. Of couse the Hawks have been in the news a lot lately with different transactions. They traded their captain Tanner Dusyk a few weeks ago and now have brought another goaltender into the fold from Fort McMurray. That leaves 3 viable goaltenders in town and maybe some trade bait for Doug in the future. It’s tough to see Jamie Johnson go because he’s a heck of a good kid and hockey player but he is now closer to home.

And finally, I texted SJHL president Bill Chow yesterday asking when the league schedule would be out. He said it would be late this week or early next week.
