Mustangs Season Tickets

Posted by Darryl Skender on June 30, 2009

If you’ve never been a season ticket holder of the Melfort Mustangs before, this might be the year you want to do so. They will be one of the top teams in the Itech Conference which should mean larger crowds (although that is always dependent on the economy). If you want to be a season ticket holder, the early bird prices are still in effect. Office Manager Tanis Jung talks about it. Early bird prices for Adults are $204.75 (including GST). Add $31.50 if you purchase after July 15th. Early bird prices for Students and Children are $120.75 & $73.50 respectively (GST included). The club has decided not to increase prices for admission this season. I tried to get a hold of head coach Darrell Mann today but assistant coach Trevor Blevins told me he is out recruiting. Darrell stopped by the station last week to introduce new recruits Lee Christensen and Charlie Pogue to the sports staff so Kenny Trenton got some interviews.

2009 Football Canada Cup Will Be Great For Huskies Future

Posted by Darryl Skender on June 30, 2009

As everyone has heard by now, the 2009 Football Canada Cup is taking place in July with the Under 17 and Under 19 teams from all over the nation competing. It starts this Saturday (July 4th) and there will be a total of 33 games which will all be played at Griffiths Stadium. This is an excellent opportunity for the Huskies to recruit. Yes, a lot of the Under 19 players have committed to programs already but it is a chance for the staff to take a look at many of the top Under 17 players from around the country. And because it is in Saskatoon, all the players will be checking out the U of S campus first-hand which is a recruiting bonus. For anyone that has never been to the campus, it is rich with history and tradition and very few universities can compare to the aura of the U of S when you walk through. This is definitely a great recruiting tool. This will also be a chance for the Dawgs coaching staff to check out some of their own recruits. They have 5 players on Team Alberta and 7 on Team Saskatchewan. By the way, the Under 17 championship game is on July 10th and the Under 19 championship game is on July 11th.

Humboldt Broncos AGM

Posted by Darryl Skender on June 30, 2009

There was little bit of confusion on the date of the Humboldt Broncos AGM. It is taking place on the 14th of July. It is expected that the Humboldt Broncos will be showing a profit this year because of their long playoff run. President Lee Dufort talks about what you can expect. The funny thing about junior hockey is that the further you go… the more money you make right… WRONG! When a team makes it all the way to the RBC Cup (The Junior ‘A’ National final), they tend to lose money because they are usually only given enough money for about 22 players but carry 26 or 28 plus all the extras for 10 or 11 days away. And just in case you were wondering, it hasn’t been released yet but the SJHL season starts on September 18th and the Green & Gold will be at home to the Notre Dame Hounds.

Broncos Looking For New Board Members

Posted by Darryl Skender on June 29, 2009

The Humboldt Broncos Board of Directors have done a fantastic job over the last few years with the operation of the organization. However, there has been some shifting with some members moving on for the upcoming season.  The organization is now in need of some new blood. President Lee Dufort talks about it. If you want to be on the Board, you better get your name in soon because the the AGM is taking place on July 14th. At that time we should find out about new members as well as the financial state of the team. Lee Dufort will be back as president this season as the Broncos try to win their 4th consecutive league championship.

Huskies Special Teams Will Be Better

Posted by Darryl Skender on June 29, 2009

The summer continues to be busy for U of S Huskies head coach Brian Towriss as he continues to both renovate his house and prepare for the upcoming Canada West football season. His team finished first in many categories including  points for and against, passing offence & defence and passing efficiency for offence and defence. Many individual players led at their position as well. One area that struggled a bit at times however was the special teams and B.T. wanted that to be one of his priorities. Here is what B.T. said. He also said that Connor McDougall will not be the kicker this season. Defensive Back Grant Shaw will be handling the duties to start the season. Grant was the back up kicker last year and also handled the kickoffs. On my next Huskies post, I will be discussing another concern of the Dawgs that seems to be addressed by B.T.’s recruiting. Have a great start to the shortened week and enjoy the weather.

Huskies Look Strong Again

Posted by Darryl Skender on June 26, 2009

We won’t know exactly how strong the Dawgs are until the first exhibition game (or maybe their first regular season game) but the U of S Huskies are looking strong once again this season. Head coach Brian Towriss is known as an excellent recruiter and has some talented guys coming in again this season. Here are a few of the key names B.T. mentioned to me yesterday. Special Teams was an area of concern last year and I will talk about what B.T. has done to improve in that area in the next Huskies blog. Also, congratulations to defensive end Ivan Brown for making the Montreal Alouettes practice roster. He joins ex-Huskie teammate Paul Woldu on the squad. Slotback Scott McHenry was let go by the Calgary Stampeders on the last day of cuts yesterday. That’s good news for the Huskies considering they had already lost Cory Jones and Taylor Kristlock as they have already used up their eligibility.  Season ticket sales are also going very well. I will talk with quarterback Laurence Nixon about that in a future blog. B.T. told me they have sold over 1500 already. Way to go guys. Don’t forget that Kelly Bowers and myself will have your first Huskies broadcast on August 28th which is an exhibition game against Alberta. Go Dawgs!

Hawks Make Money

Posted by Darryl Skender on June 25, 2009

The Nipawin Hawks attendanace was a little disappointing last year but I guess you could say that about the whole league. The economy has less people buying tickets and more people watching TV. People like Marion Schenher (former Marketing Co-ordinator) as well as all the volunteers and fundraisers made up for the lack of fans in the seats to help the team make money. Coach & GM Colin O’Hara told me that Jim Chute will be a terrific replacement in the Marketing department. Here is a clip of President Blaine Clarke talking about the organization making money last year. Also, congratulations to all the new board members and thanks to the outgoing members who dedicated al ot of  their time. They are Rob Wallington, Trevis Sturby, Kevin Verzonowski and Kevin Lockwood.
